Poster for Jimmy Penguin Gig 17/02/12

Best known perhaps as one of the scratch ninjas behind Galway’s ‘Community Skratch Games’ (an annual week-long celebration of scratch music and culture), DJ/producer Jimmy Penguin made formidable pixelated waves in the Irish chiptune scene, and beyond, at the start of this year when he released the album "Ninjenisid".

Made when 2012 was still young and innocent, using various free NES- and SID-chip emulators, "Ninjenisid " is a seriously accomplished chipmusic release. It brings the listener on a most entertaining journey through the various levels of a virtual videogame, with nods to classic 8-bit VGM aplenty – replete with "title screen" and "game over" sequences as its opening and closing tracks, and aptly imagined "levels" along the way. Whatever the chiptune purists might say about "fakebit", we say this is how it's supposed to be done!

After all, as one of the country's most progressive scratch DJs, Jimmy has dedicated the best part of the last decade to advancing the possibilities of the turntable as a musical instrument. His own productions have showcased music styles from bass heavy electronica through to slow building ambient noodlings with lushly orchestrated instrumentation. Never a stranger to innovation, he'd crafted songs before using the mighty little Korg DS-10 snynth for NintendoDS. Now he's now taken on the wonderful possibilities of the sound palettes that can be squeezed from the archaic sound-chips in well-loved videogame consoles, and in doing so has pretty much captured the essence of what chipmusic, at its best, is all about. The results, we feel you'll agree, are rather tasty. Most definitely check out "Ninjenisid" over at bandcamp – you won't be disappointed. And check out some of his other output at http://www.alkalinearrecordings.tumblr.com/ or http://www.nozlrecordings.com/

You won't be disappointed either when he performs the album live, in its entirety and with extra bonus levels, exclusive to Gamepak, at our new monthly home in the Dark Horse, on 17th February.  In fact we're more than delighted to welcome Jimmy along to inaugurate what are shaping up as a super series of nights.

Support on the night comes from the excellent KaraKara, performing live, with Gamepak DJs to heat things up, interactive bigscreen visuals and classic games to play too.

Oh and the price of admission is absolutely free!

QPOP gets the circuit bends at Exchange Dublin

Gamepak at inaugural Glitch Festival 5th/6th August

We’re delighted that members of Gamepak collective will be taking part in an AV performance as part of Dublin’s inaugural Glitch Festival. The event startsat 5:30 pm, and included a circuit-bent ‘cinema’ set from Holland’s Karl Klomp and Tom Verbruggen, as well as an AV performance from circuit-bender and instrument-builder extraordinaire, Gijs Gieskes, both of which promise to be absolutely unmissable. To kick things off though, will bea short live performance from Gamepak’s gLotChbOt and SU7A7S, joined by visualist iNFOTOXiN.

Using a variety of bent casio keyboards and modified toys, fed through an array of analogue effects, onetime Siam Collective mainman John Leech, aka SU7A7S, will create a veritable wall of noise. He’ll be joined in the mix by Gamepak’s Andy (Zyme), who’ll be wearing his gLOtChbOt hat for the night as he utilises homebrew software running on the Nintendo DS to jam out some generative glitchmusic, arranging samples of circuit-bent and video-game sounds using cellular automata as a sequencer matrix.

More info to be found here , directions can be found here or check Google maps here.
